Electric cars are the most environmentally friendly over time, research shows

Every year, Green NCAP prepares a report on the electric cars and how much they burden the environment. This year, the organization believes that the electric car wins on environmental friendliness.

Since 2020, Green NCAP, a sister body to the crash test unit Euro NCAP, has been monitoring the impact of electric cars on the climate.

Ever since, reports have been drawn up showing the impact of cars on the environment from cradle to grave. So from a single car rolling off the assembly line until it is scrapped again.

So far – i.e. to the wrecker – only very few cars from 2020 have made it. So Green NCAP's estimates are based on the future and not the impact here and now.

Still, the organization doesn't think there is that much to discuss. At least not when it comes to which type of car is the least loaded.

– Green NCAP's new life cycle analyzes show that the environmental impact of electric and plug-in hybrid cars is reduced over their lifetime compared to cars that only have a combustion engine.

– This change can largely be attributed to the reduced emissions in battery production and the improvement of Europe's future energy mix, writes Green NCAP in the report.

The analysis assumes that the cars have a lifespan of 16 years and an estimated mileage of 240,000 kilometers before they are scrapped. And that energy consumption develops according to certain set limitations in the EU's 27 member states. That is, where the energy comes from. The so-called energy mix.

Against this background, Green NCAP believes that the EU countries' CO2 emissions will fall by a further 26 percent towards 2039. And if you look at the individual car models, it is a Chinese that performs best.

According to Green NCAP, a BYD Dolphin emits 23 tonnes of CO2 from the time it rolls off the assembly line to the day it is scrapped. MG4 and Smart 3 follow.

Worst, that is, when you add it up in terms of CO2 emissions, it looks like the diesel car Fiat Doblo. That car emits 64 tonnes of CO2 over its lifetime.

If you ask the Chinese-owned Volvo, the difference, when measured in CO2 emissions, is vanishingly small between the internal combustion and electric engines. Read more about it here .
