Electric car batteries have become 90 percent cheaper in 15 years

While motorists are still paying far too much for new cars, car brands can be happy that batteries for electric cars have dropped 90 percent in price in 15 years.

Despite government subsidies, motorists still pay far too much for new electric cars. And that even though the batteries for them have become 90 percent cheaper in 15 years.

This is shown by new figures from the US Department of Energy. Specifically, it is the Vehicle Technologies Office department that has looked at the figures.

And they are very clear. Between 2008 and 2023, it has become 90 percent cheaper to put a battery in an electric car.

According to the American authorities, the car brands paid up to 1,415 dollars in 2008, corresponding to 118,000 kroner per car. kWh. Last year, that price was down to 139 dollars, corresponding to 949 Danish kroner.

The drastically reduced price is just not really something drivers notice. State subsidies and other incentives are still needed to lure people over to electric cars.

This is clearly seen in Germany, where interest in electric cars has collapsed for the 7th month in a row, after the country's government stopped all public support for the purchase of electric cars with immediate effect in December 2023.

Even so, the price of battery packs has not yet bottomed out. At least not if you ask the research firm Gartner. Here it is expected that it will not be until 2027 that the electric car will be cheaper to build than the internal combustion engine.

Something else is whether the generally declining interest in electric cars among consumers has a negative impact on or delays the already falling costs of electric car batteries.

Not everyone expects electric cars to become cheap right away, either. Or for that matter in 2027. At Mercedes, for example, they believe that the really cheap electric car has very long prospects. Read more about it here .

At the same time, the car brands are almost in a row to undo targets for electric cars. Most recently, Audi has announced that you cannot do without the combustion engine in 2033 after all.

Then there are also the car brands that continue to claim that they make next to nothing on electric cars. At Volkswagen, they say outright that the business will look bad without the internal combustion engine. Read more about it here .
