The majority will not ban diesel and petrol cars

The EU is proposing that new diesel and petrol cars be phased out completely by 2035. But on the street, most people clearly say no thanks to a ban.

The car industry is increasingly questioning the EU ban on the internal combustion engine, which will apply from 2035. And on the street, the majority say no.

Because while the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, still wants to ban all new internal combustion engines, the drivers on the street clearly say no.

However, according to a new survey conducted among German motorists, the attitude is completely different. Only 17 percent of motorists are in favor of banning the internal combustion engine, as the EU wants.

Conversely, 44 percent were in favor of abolishing the ban directly, while a further 7 percent would at least like to see the EU postpone the decision.

The survey based on 1,008 German motorists, interestingly, the attitude towards a ban on new petrol and diesel cars among both men and women on the roads is largely the same.

At the same time, the survey shows that none of the respondents are particularly interested in cars. It is therefore solely about their position on a ban.

However, the survey also shows that the older the drivers, the more they are directly against a ban on the internal combustion engine. 49 percent of drivers over 40 want the EU to drop the ban. While almost a quarter of those under 30 want the EU to implement the ban.

One is what the EU and the population may disagree on. Something else is what the car brands actually think can be done. And in recent months, car brand after car brand has almost stopped short of undoing targets for electric cars.

Most recently, Audi announced that the brand 'needs to be flexible'. This means that the people of Ingolstadt still cannot do without the internal combustion engine by 2033 at the latest, as promised. Read more about it here .
