The EU must not ban millions of older diesel cars at all

In Germany, the country's transport minister fears that the EU will ban millions of diesel cars next year. But the union must not do that at all, says the German answer to FDM, ADAC.

In Germany, the country's transport minister, Volker Wissing, fears that the EU plans to ban millions of diesel cars on the union's roads as early as January 1, 2025.

In Germany alone, it will be about 8 million diesel cars, because these are type-approved according to an older emission standard than Euro 6, although certain Euro 6 cars also risk a ban, the German minister believes.

But the EU must not make such rules retroactively. At least not if you ask the German answer to FDM, ADAC.

– In the opinion of ADAC's lawyers, changes in the measurement procedure for type approval of a choir carriage at a later date cannot be applied retroactively.

– Against this background, a traffic ban is "absurd", says the interest organisation.

And the German car industry's association VDA sees a ban on the older diesel cars as completely wrong. And if it happens anyway, it will be a violation of the principle that rules are not introduced with retroactive effect in the EU, believes chairwoman Hildegard Müller.

According to the DPA, the EU's commissioner for the internal market in the EU, Thierry Breton, rejects that the EU wants to come after drivers in older diesel cars. The commissioner writes this in a reply to the German minister.

The letter states that the EU Commission does not wish to decide anything that 'would in any way disadvantage citizens who have bought cars in good faith'.
