Dropping General Motors comeback? Expensive lease is terminated

General Motors has not been in Europe since 2015. But last year plans were made for a major comeback. Now those plans may have been dropped.

General Motors has not been in Europe since 2015. But last year the American car group planned a major comeback.

Now, according to Bilnytt.no, it looks like it won't come to anything after all. In any case, there are indications that the plans are seriously faltering.

To understand the coherence of the plans, which may now have collapsed, we have to go back to February 2023. This is where General Motors leased Nedre Slottsgate 21 in Oslo.

The building, which previously housed Norway's first McDonald's, was to be used as so-called 'brand building' and 'storytelling' on GM's part. However, the group never commented on the plans.

And now the place is apparently abandoned again. There is not the slightest trace that GM has been present. On the contrary, a 'for rent' sign has simply been put up again.

Bilnytt.no suspects that General Motors has packed up the plans for a European relaunch again.

It has otherwise been reported that GM would bet on only taking its brands' electric cars to Europe. They have also tried a little with the new Cadillac Lyriq in Germany, Switzerland and France. All this, however, without having an actual dealer network in place.

But whether General Motors is really on its way out of Europe again, the Norwegian media has not been able to get confirmation. In any case, the Norwegian subsidiary has not returned the media's inquiries.

And although the group is now away from the exclusive address in Oslo, the Norwegian company has not been completely idle.

A review of the latest accounts showed that General Motors Norge A/S had a turnover of just over 3.7 million Norwegian kroner in 2023. This corresponds to 2.33 million Danish kroner.
