Germany's sales of electric cars collapse for the 7th month in a row

In Germany, it is noted for the 7th month in a row that electric cars sell poorly without government subsidies. In the month of July, sales fell by almost 37 percent.

The Germans are not crazy about electric cars. At least not those without government support. For the 7th month in a row, sales of electric cars fell in Germany, which is otherwise Europe's largest car market.

This shows completely new figures from the German response to the Swedish Transport Agency KBA .

In total, just over 30,000 new electric cars were sold in July 2024. This is a decrease of 36.8 percent compared to the same month last year.

Electric cars are now down to 29 percent of total new car sales in Germany. This must be seen in the context of the country's government removing all support for electric cars in December last year. It happened with immediate effect. That is, from one day to the next.

A total of 238,263 new passenger cars were registered on Europe's largest car market in July. Overall, almost 126,000 new petrol and diesel cars were sold. For both fuel types, sales – contrary to electric cars – went forward.

Only a few car brands fared positively in the month of July. Volvo did – exactly against how things are going at home in China – really well in the month of July with a sales increase of 66 percent.

Here it was the small but otherwise problematic electric car EX30 that drew most of the progress for the brand. Other brands lag significantly behind. Also the Germans' own.

BMW went back by 12 percent, Mercedes by 7.7 percent, Audi by 2.5 percent, and Volkswagen went into the red by more than 4 percent. Ford, which also has factories in Germany, fell by 18 percent.

And at Tesla, which builds cars on the outskirts of Berlin, sales fell by 37 percent. There are, however, positive rates on the used car market. A total of 698,000 used cars changed hands in Germany. This is an increase of 14.8 percent compared to a year ago.
