New EU requirement benefits electric cars but kills voluntary associations

From 1 January 2025, a new EU requirement for charging stations in car parks could be the death of many voluntary associations.

From 1 January 2025, all public car parks in EU member states with space for at least 20 cars must have at least 2 charging stations for electric cars set up.

It could be the death knell for many voluntary associations. The EU directive is called 'clean energy for all'. But for the small voluntary associations it can do more harm than good.

Carup writes that.

In Sweden, you are already feeling the consequences. Just having one charging station set up costs the association three times as much as is set aside annually for maintenance of the clubhouse.

Magnus Olofsson from Öljehult's Community Association outside Ronneby in Blekinge tells the media. The demand as such is not new. Already in 2019, Swedish housing associations were informed that charging stations must be established with retroactive effect.

At home, the same requirements apply. By 1 January 2025 at the latest, parking lots with space for at least 20 cars and where no one lives in the associated building must have at least one charging station installed.

However, the Danske Bilimportorer, which is now called Mobility Danmark, was already ready in October 2023 to go much further than that. The interest organization now demands that everyone with an electric car must have the right to charge in Denmark. Read more about it here .

Back in Sweden, a number of voluntary associations both at local and national level have now approached the government in the hope of being exempted from the rules.
