10-year-old Volvo scores top marks in crash tests

It is well over 10 years ago that the current Volvo XC90 was a new car. But the aging Swedish-Chinese still performs excellently when it comes to crash tests.

Already in 2018, the British Volvo importer could announce that no one had ever lost their life in an XC90. At least not since its launch in 2002.

The model still on the road is still performing well. At least when it comes to the crash tests that the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, IIHS, subjects the car to.

The Americans have gone hard for the old Volvo. The car gets serious beatings, but it does not deviate from the line, which gives top marks.

Not even if the Americans i.a. have tightened the requirements for safety in frontal collisions. The result was and still is that the XC90 gets the highest rating: Top Safety Pick+.

So did the current BMW X5, although the car is otherwise much newer than the Volvo. The first X5 G05s were assembled when the Volvo was already four years old in 2018.

– Safety is at the heart of everything we do at Volvo Cars. As part of our company's long-standing focus on security, we constantly strive to raise the level of security.

– It reflects the XC90. And we are proud that it has been recognized by the IIHS when you consider our goal of reducing traffic-related deaths and injuries, says the director of Volvo's US importer, Mike Cottone, in a press release .

At home, the big Volvo is still part of the importer's model range. But that's only as a petrol-powered plug-in hybrid.

Already in September 2022, Volvo stopped the sale of pure petrol and diesel cars in Denmark. And earlier this year, the brand built its last ever diesel car. Read more about it here .
