Wild Tesla battery is ready after threat from Elon Musk

It has taken Tesla's employees four years, and a threat that Elon Musk will scrap the entire project, to finish the so-called 4680-cell battery.

Tesla should actually have launched a battery with 4680 cells four years ago. But nothing has really happened since then, other than that the Cybertruck has been equipped with a partial version of the promised battery pack.

But now, says Tesla, something has happened. The development comes after the car brand's director, Elon Musk, threatened to scrap the entire project if no progress was made by the New Year.

Because of the ultimatum from the boss, the Tesla employees found it difficult to find other solutions than to manufacture the battery's electrodes in a way that subsequently requires torrefaction in very large ovens and is therefore very costly.

But now Tesla has succeeded in producing the brand's very own and not least dry electrode. And Tesla must even be so far ahead with the preparatory work that they will be able to put the 4680-cell battery into production before the end of the year.

This is what Autoevolution writes on the basis of a LinkedIn posting from Cole Otto, who is a production engineer in Tesla's battery department.

However, Tesla is not alone in this. Both competitors LG and Panasonic have announced that they will be ready with actual series production of similar batteries at the same time.

On the other hand, it is good news for consumers, aka motorists, who can then perhaps look forward to cheaper electric cars. Here, however, the word maybe is.

Because even though battery packs for electric cars have never been cheaper than they are at the moment, this does not affect the price tag of the electric cars. The Mercedes brand does not expect the electric car to be able to compete with either the diesel or petrol car yet. Read more about it here .
