Millions of cars to be banned on January 1, Germany says

On German roads alone, 8 million cars risk being banned on January 1, 2025 due to strictures from the EU. The warning from the German Transport Minister Volker Wissing is so accurate,

Around 8 million diesel cars are to be banned because the EU wants to interpret current rules more restrictively.

The warning from Germany's Transport Minister Volker Wissing, who has now asked the EU Commission for an explanation, sounds so accurate.

The background for the desire for a tighter interpretation from the EU's side lies in the previous measurement method and fuel standard NEDC. It is the one that will be looked at more strictly in Brussels.

Specifically, Volker Wissing believes that the EU intends that the limit values for pollution in the old NEDC standard should also apply to the 'operating conditions'. That is, when a fully loaded passenger car is driving up a hill, for example.

In such a scenario, the engine works at full power, but the fact that the EU comes up with stricter interpretation requirements subsequently has no place, believes the German minister.

– It cannot be implemented when the current technology is taken into account. It (the requirement, ed.) represents an unrealistic demand for the choir uniforms that are already on the roads today.

Wissing believes that this will mean that all Euro 5-approved cars will be banned, and that it cannot be ruled out that Euro 6 cars will be affected either.

– Millions of choir carriages risk being taken out of service (removed from the roads, ed.), Wissing believes.

In Germany alone, according to Auto Bild, there are 4.3 million Euro 5 diesel cars, while there is a risk that 3.9 million Euro 6 cars will be affected by the rules.

The transport minister fears that many millions of diesel cars across Europe, which are far from obsolete, will no longer be allowed to drive from January 2025. That is why Wissing is now demanding that EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have the rules changed.
