New figures: Europe's motorists still prefer petrol cars

Statsstottote only brings the electric car a little along the way into motorists' garages, where it is still the petrol car that dominates. It shows new figures.

There is not much to discuss. It is still the petrol car that dominates and tops the sales lists in Europe.

Meanwhile, sales of electric cars have now declined in several of the very large countries in Europe. In Germany, this has happened for the sixth month in a row. Most recently with 18.1 percent in June. In the Netherlands, sales of electric cars have fallen by 15 percent, and in France by 10.3 percent.

So far, most car buyers in Europe have chosen pure petrol cars. Specifically, petrol cars have a market share of 35.3 per cent, followed by the hybrid car, which sits at 29.2 per cent of the market.

If the hybrids are combined with diesel and petrol cars, the car types account for 84.3 percent of the entire car market in Europe, while electric cars take 12.5 percent. The rest are hydrogen and gas cars.

This is shown by brand new figures from the European car manufacturers' association, Acea. However, this is not because overall car sales are impressive. In fact, it only increased by 4.3 percent across the whole of Europe during the month of June.

Thus, the general picture in Europe is somewhat different than in Denmark. In general, the cheap Dacia Sandero is also Denmark's most popular car. At least when it comes to sales figures. Read more about it here.

At home, 45 percent of sales in the first six months of 2024 have gone to the pure electric car. While not a single hydrogen car has been registered. This must be seen in the context of the fact that the last hydrogen stations in Denmark closed last year.

However, several car brands refuse to write off hydrogen as an energy source in passenger cars. The same applies in the world of motorcycles. Kawasaki is so far ahead with development that the Japanese believe they can mass-produce the hydrogen-burning motorcycle in the early 2030s. Read more about it here .
