New car battery is claimed to charge 1,000 kilometers in 9 minutes

The battery manufacturer Samsung SDI has just presented a prototype of a solid state battery, where there is current for almost 1,000 kilometers in 9 minutes.

For the last several years, the car industry has been screaming that the so-called solid state (solid substance, ed.) batteries are waiting just around the corner. Now Samsung claims to have done something about it.

It is the battery department of the company, Samsung SDI, that presented the battery to the public in connection with the SNE Battery Day conference.

This is written by the South Korean media The Elec .

According to the media, Samsung SDI claims that their solid-state battery charges enough current for a 965 chorus trip in 9 minutes. Among other things, because the energy density is just around 500 Wh per kilo. That's twice the energy density of even the best lithium-ion batteries.

During the conference, Samsung SDI must also have said that the battery pack has a minimum lifespan of 20 years, and that it will be ready to throw it into electric cars in 2027. A full year for Nissan, for example, means that it is ready with solid state – technology in electric cars. Read more about it here.

Back at Samsung SDI, they have allegedly already started a small production of the solid state batteries, which a number of – however unnamed – car brands have had the opportunity to test.

And even if 2027 isn't so damn far in the future, drivers shouldn't expect to see much of Samsung's new batteries. At least not right away.

The South Koreans initially expect the batteries to find their way into the most expensive electric cars. All for the simple reason that the battery pack is still hugely expensive to manufacture.

While Samsung SDI is working on new battery packs, several of its competitors are struggling just to survive. The world's fourth largest battery manufacturer, which is also located in South Korea, has declared a state of emergency after 10 quarters with losses in the accounts. Read more about it here .
