Volvo drops 2030 ceiling on "electric cars or nothing"

Volvo has said that it will build electric cars or nothing after 2030. There would be no 'ifs', no 'buts'. However, the exceptions are coming now.

Volvo has long said that it would only build electric cars after 2030. There should be no exceptions. But the exceptions are coming now.

The brand's commercial director Björn Annwall has previously said that there is no way around electric cars. No 'buts', no 'ifs'.

And yet. For now, Annwall has to deal with being reprimanded by managing director Jim Rowan. At least to the investors.

That's what Automotive News writes.

In an online fashion with Volvo's investors, Jim Rowan must have said that he is still a big supporter of electric cars, but that it will take time because all markets are ready for the electric car.

Therefore, Volvo will continue to invest in the hybrid cars and their engines. At home, drivers cannot get anything else from Volvo other than hybrid and electric cars. The brand removed all clean diesel and petrol cars in September 2022.

And back in March this year, Volvo was able to say that the production of diesel cars has generally come to a standstill. Read more about it here.

It is especially the market for electric cars in the USA that is not growing as fast as expected, punitive tariffs on Chinese cars in Europe and various political announcements that slow down the sale of electric cars. Not just for Volvo, but for most car manufacturers.

However, Volvo's electric cars have massive problems. Recently, Jim Rowan had to admit that brand new electric cars need to be redesigned. And those that are already on the roads are in several cases bought back from disappointed customers.

In the US, several dealers have said outright that Volvo is not ready to sell only electric cars in 2030. And if the brand decides to do it anyway, it will mean a closure of Volvo Cars.
