Volvo will die if they only build electric cars, say dealers

Volvo's American car dealers do not think the car brand is ready to build only electric cars in 2030. If it happens anyway, Volvo will do as a car brand, they believe.

Volvo's American car dealers don't think the brand will survive its own strategy of only building electric cars in 2030.

So now the decision, which the top management of the Chinese brand has made, is facing fierce criticism. The American dealers simply do not believe that Volvo is ready to sell only electric cars.

– We must (build fossil-fuel cars, ed.). Otherwise we die. Volvo has embarked on an EV-only strategy because they are ready for it, a dealer who spoke anonymously told Automotive News .

According to the American dealers, it is customer demand and not a principled decision that will drive development.

– It doesn't matter how many electric cars the industry wants to build. You can't force electric cars onto a market that doesn't want them, say the dealers.

Officially, however, Volvo is not shaking its hand. In contrast to several of the competitors, who have recently backed away from ceilings to only build electric cars by 2030 at the latest, the Chinese brand is holding firm.

There will be nothing but electric passenger cars from Volvo in 2030. But the dealers on the other side of the Atlantic think that is a shame.

– If you build the SPA1 platform (which Volvo has used since 2014 for cars with combustion engines, ed.) it is technology that can keep the cars alive for more than a decade.

– This is a fantastic chassis and a fantastic undercarriage. It's just a matter of changing it around the cars, say the dealers.

At home, Volvo stopped the sale of pure diesel and petrol cars in September 2022. Back in March, Volvo also built its last ever diesel car. It must go to a museum. But it is actually possible to get hold of some of its siblings. Read more about it here .

At home, Volvo's small electric car EX30 may sell quite well. But the brand cannot deny that the car is full of faults. The same applies to the larger soster EX90. In fact, the car is so bad that Volvo has to spend billions of kroner to fix it. Read more about it here .
