Lack of buttons in electric cars can be responsible for accidents

It's a trend that Tesla is leading the way. So the lack of buttons in new electric cars. Now, however, it turns out that the missing buttons can be to blame for accidents.

Euro NCAP will make physical buttons a requirement for the highest possible safety assessment in future crash tests. And that might be a really good idea.

For now, figures from the US traffic safety authorities show that the lack of buttons in new electric cars can be linked to traffic accidents.

Ars Technica writes that.

The media has reviewed 13 reports from traffic accidents that the American authority has registered. Accidents involving Volkswagen's ID.4 were specifically looked at.

Here, several of the owners complain about the lack of physical buttons after accidents. At the same time, the ID.4 owners say that it is far too easy to turn on the functions that the touch panels in the cars store by mistake.

This kind of thing can turn on functions in situations where they are absolutely unwanted, say the ID.4 owners. There are indications, however, that Volkswagen has already listened to the criticism.

Because although there is nothing to be done in the electric cars that are already built without buttons, and where the owners have to make do with touch surfaces instead, there is something to be done in the future cars.

And Volkswagen does. In fact, regardless of what fuel the brand's cars run on, several of the physical buttons now return to the cabins.

Fortunately, the vast majority of accident reports that Ars Technica has reviewed have occurred at lower speeds. For example during parking manoeuvres. But that doesn't excuse or explain away owners feeling annoyed by the lack of physical buttons.

In at least three cases, however, the accidents quickly resulted in personal injury. It is far from the first time that there has been serious criticism of touch buttons. A Swedish test has already established that the touch screens in new cars are dangerous. Read more about it here .
