This week, the EU imposed punitive tariffs on Chinese cars. The 27 EU countries just cannot agree on what is the right thing to do.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has already said what she thinks about the Chinese electric cars. Namely that they are a threat to Europe's own car industry, because the communist dictatorship illegally holds the hand of the country's car industry with state subsidies.
But in the EU Parliament there is a divided mood. Twelve member states voted for a punitive tariff on the Chinese cars, while four countries voted against. 11 countries abstained entirely. Including Finland, Sweden and Germany.

However, the vote that has taken place is not binding. And the countries are therefore free to change their minds. However, the temporary duty of up to 37.6 percent may fall to the ground as early as October.
Here, the EU countries must vote on a more permanent penal customs state. The German car industry has already warned against the introduction of the customs duty. Primarily because the car brands are afraid of the consequences in China, where they get a large part of their sales.
Conversely, the penalty has already started to affect car prices. Also here at home. For example, Tesla has raised the price of the Model 3, because the model that is brought to Europe.
