New battery claims to be able to charge an electric car for 2.5 years

A new giant battery can store enough electricity to power a house or an electric car for a whole year. However, the Chinese creators CATL say that there is enough power for 2.5 years in an electric car.

Chinese CATL, one of the world's largest battery manufacturers, claims to have developed a battery so large and with such high energy density that it can keep an electric car supplied with electricity for 2.5 years.

The battery pack must be stored in a six meter long container. In return, the Chinese promise that their battery will not lose any of its capacity in the first five years and that it has a lifespan of 20 years at 750 charging cycles per year.

CATL writes this in a press release .

The battery cells from which the battery pack is made are rebuilt with LFP chemistry and have an energy density of 430 Wh/liter.

The Chinese claim that it is enough energy for a household of four people who also have an electric car that needs to be charged. Conversely, no ordinary household has the opportunity to charge the battery, which makes it difficult in the real world.

On the other hand, it is not the energy consumption and needs of private households that CATL is aiming for with the enclosed huge battery pack. Instead, the Chinese go after the energy needs of industry. For example, by promising that the containers can be stacked on top of each other like Lego bricks.

Time will tell whether the container system will ever come to fruition. The same is the case with Volkswagen, which has just bought the license to build 1 million very special electric cars. Read more about it here .
