Wants Toyota banned from the Olympics for running on hydrogen

120 people have now complained to the Olympic Committee, which is behind the Olympic Games, because Toyota is showing off the Mirai hydrogen car.

The Toyota Mirai runs on hydrogen and must therefore be expelled from the Olympic Games.

That's what 120 academics and engineers think, as in an open letter to the Olympic organizer. In the letter, it is stated that the hydrogen cars inhibit and delay the green transition. Something the 120 people believe can only happen with electric cars.

The 120 people also write that it risks damaging the reputation of the Olympics if a car manufacturer like Toyota is allowed to market the hydrogen car during the Games.

The letter's authors urge the Olympic Committee to throw out the Toyota and find a conventional electric car with a cord to advertise instead.

As an explanation for the unwanted rejection of Toyota's hydrogen car, the signatories of the letter disguise themselves as the UN's climate panel, IPCC. Here, it is believed that electric cars with a cable are the most effective way to overcome climate change from the transport sector.

In addition, the 120 people believe that hydrogen cars require three times as much energy to run at all compared to a conventional electric car.

The letter, which can be read in full here , has been handed to the President of the 2024 Olympics, the event's Director of Transport and the President of the Olympic Committee.

Out on the roads, the Toyota Mirai, which the Japanese will advertise during the Olympic Games, doesn't have much tailwind either. All Danish hydrogen stations are closed, and in the US the owners are busy suing Toyota for selling a 'useless car'. Read more about it here.

On the other hand, the criticism does not make Toyota throw the development of hydrogen cars in the bin. On the contrary, the Japanese are working towards getting ordinary combustion engines to run on hydrogen. Just as they continue to work with the technology in Mirai – namely fuel cells.
