Cyclists want to ban cars in Denmark from going 30 km/h

If it were up to the Cyclistforbundet, all motorists in Denmark must be banned ever again from driving over 30 km/h in the cities.

Several cities have already started chasing drivers with lower speed requirements. But according to the Cyklistforbundet, all motorists in all Danish cities must be prohibited from driving at 30 km/h.

The speed must be reduced, the interest organization tells DR .

For the same reason, Cyklistforbundet has started collecting signatures. Signatures you want to use to ban anything over 30 km/h in the cities.

The signatures will be handed over to Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen "after the summer holidays", it says.

– The cars must drive 30 kilometers per hour, so that they take proper account of the bloody road users. Those sitting inside the cars are very well protected. It is those who cycle or walk who are the most vulnerable, says the association's director Kenneth Øhrberg Krag.

If the Danish cyclists succeed in reducing the permitted speed in urban areas, they will not be the first to limit motorists. It has already happened in Frankfurt.

But in the German city they have actually gone even further than what the Danish cyclists set out to do. Here the speed limit is 20 km/h, and it also applies to cyclists. Read more about it here.

At home, however, similar measures are also on the table. In Odense, a majority of the city council already decided in November 2023 that motorists may not drive more than 20 km/h in most of the city. Conversely, the municipality will not introduce a zero-emission zone that prohibits everything other than electric cars.
