New EU rule could be the death of plug-in hybrids in 2027

As early as 2027, it will be the end of new plug-in hybrids in Europe, believes the think tank International Council on Clean Transportation.

Plugin hybrids are surging forward at the moment. And it comes to the extent behind the car brands that motorists want them. But as early as 2027 it may be over.

With reference to a series of new strictures at EU level, the American think tank International Council on Clean Transportation believes they have already read the writing on the wall.

This is written by German Heise Auto .

Specifically, with the revised set of rules, called Euro 6e-FCM, it will be impossible for the EU to keep the plug-in hybrids below 50 grams of CO2 per kilometer. That is, if you ask the American think tank.

It has been shown that drivers are generally lazy types who 'forget' to charge their plug-in hybrids with electricity. And then the cars emit much more CO2 than they are actually set for based on the current WLTP standard, which determines everything from emissions to fuel economy.

The think tank believes that the car manufacturers must increase the electric range in the plug-in hybrids by almost 3 times compared to now, because in 2027 it will make sense to keep the car type alive.

– The electric car is already more cost-effective for the buyers. We believe that more realistic consumption figures for the plug-in hybrids will reinforce that trend, says Jan Dornoff from the International Council on Clean Transportation, according to Heise Auto

Conversely, it is actually the plug-in hybrids that Mercedes with a new strategy is investing heavily in. The German brand is finding it more than difficult to sell electric cars.

Therefore, managing director Ola Källenius is now throwing a whopping DKK 105 billion into the development of fuel-efficient models that can drive 'very far' on electricity alone. Read more about it here .

However, 2027 may not only prove to be the death knell for plug-in hybrids. At the same time, the EU will introduce a quota system for all fuels other than electricity for electric cars.

This means that petrol and diesel will become significantly more expensive. However, the diesel price will already be raised in Denmark from the new year. Read more about it here .
