Is extremely thin oil dangerous for your car's engine?

Toyota with an oil so thin that it looks like water? But is it dangerous. It has Lake Speed Jr. set out to find out.

Some new cars run on increasingly thinner oil. So thin that in several cases it resembles water. One of the car brands that swears by thin oil is Toyota.

According to the factory's regulations , the hybrid cars in particular must be cleaned with a 0W-16 oil. And in fact, Toyota recommends that some cars switch to 0W-8 oil subsequently.

Oil manufacturers Liqui Moly and Champion have developed 0W-8 oils that the latest hybrids from Mazda and Toyota can run on. According to the manufacturers, the oils meet the JASO GLV-1 standard, which the Japanese require.

But is it good for the engines? The oil man Lake Speed Jr., who is the son of a former Nascar racer, has set out to find out.

Speed Jr.'s daughter owns a Toyota Corolla hybrid with the thin 0W-16 oil, which after the first service at the workshop got 0W-8 oil.

Between oil changes, Lake Speed Jr. took out. however, some samples from the oil, which he subsequently had analyzed. After a week, he received the first result.

There was and is nothing wrong with the 0W-16 oil. On all parameters, there are incredibly few metal residues to be found in the oil. Perhaps even so few that they are not worth noting.

For the 0W-8 oil, the result is at least as good. In fact, the results are so good that Speed Jr. in the video below admits that a test may not have been necessary at all.

– I feel very satisfied with the results. Everything looks really good, he says.
