Mazda takes the life of popular engine in Europe

It has gone unnoticed. But Mazda has killed the 2-liter engine in the MX-5. There are now only stock cars left.

Everything has an end. Also at Mazda. Inconspicuously, the Japanese have killed the 2-liter engine in the MX-5.

It is the brand's Italian importer who, according to Motor1, confirms that the biggest engine in the small roadster is now a thing of the past in Europe.

However, it is still possible to order a car from the factory, but then it must be a right-hand drive, which is delivered to England, which in 2020 opted out of the EU.

The smaller 1.5-liter engine with 132 horsepower is also the only remaining variant in Denmark. And it is expensive. The importer will get as much as DKK 313,000 for the version with the least equipment. However, the price can grow to DKK 432,000.

On the other hand, the smaller engine is a bit lighter and is known for wanting to rev a lot. Whether the larger engine will return is difficult to answer.

But in the case of the MX-5, it is probably unlikely. At least in the current ND generation. Ever stricter emission requirements for new cars make it apparently difficult to justify the two litres.

Something else is that the next MX-5 could go and become a pure electric car. If it is not with the engine plans that Mazda has together with Suzuki and Toyota. Read more about it here .

Conversely, Mazda are not the only ones forced to give up engines. Due to completely new EU requirements on so-called cyber security, Porsche has to say goodbye to a whole range of models. Among other things, the petrol-powered Macan.
