This is how lightning can destroy your electric car

Lightning and thunder threaten to destroy quite a lot of electronics in private homes. Also immediately outside on four wheels. So the electric car, says the director.

Although summer has officially arrived, there is not only sun and plus temperatures on the menu. The last few days have – at least here in Denmark – offered numerous amounts of precipitation.

The rain also brings the thunder with it. And it is not necessarily very cool for the owners of electric cars. This is the opinion of Johan Bäckman, author of the 'Askskyddshandboken' and director of Dehn Sweden.

However, having a car standing to charge at a public charging station should not be a problem, says Johan Bäckman in an interview with Elinstallatoren.se .

These charging stands are covered by a wide range of requirements for protection against lightning strikes. Where a lightning strike can become a problem is in private homes.

Especially in those homes where there is nothing to disconnect against overvoltage.

– If you don't have a surge protector, you have to pull the cable (between the car and the charging box, ed.) out, says Bäckström.

The recommendation is actually the same at home. At least with a number of charging operators and energy companies who, among other things, sells electricity for electric cars.

For example, Circle K recommends that you, as an electric car owner, refrain from charging the car during a thunderstorm. Most car factories do the same, writes the company.

The reason is that lightning strikes, which can kill smaller electronic devices such as televisions, ovens and other things, can also make life miserable for an electric car. In fact, a lightning strike can cause damage to both the car, the home charger and the house.

So it's best to just leave it alone, even if the charging box has built-in protection against overload, short circuit and lightning.
