Motorists think it's snowing – 21 per cent are putting on winter tires now

The winter tires should really have been replaced a long time ago. Yet 21 percent of motorists still drive around them, a new report shows.

According to new data from the Tire Importers Association and the Council for Greater Tire Safety, most passenger cars have switched to summer tires this year. The survey, which was carried out in various public car parks in week 26, reveals the drivers' choice of tyres.

This is what Dækbranchen Danmark writes in a press release .

The proportion of cars still running on winter tires in the summer is at the same level as in 2022, namely 15 percent.

The industry sees this as a positive sign. However, Volker Nitz from the Council for Greater Tire Safety emphasizes the importance of having the right tires for the season for reasons of safety, economy and the environment.

– It is important that there are the right tires on the car for the season, both for reasons of safety, economy and the climate, says Volker Nitz.

At high temperatures, winter tires become unstable, resulting in poorer braking distance and grip in summer.

On wet roads, winter tires have a 15 percent longer braking distance. While the grip on dry roads is 10 percent worse. And especially in curves.

Volker Nitz points out the importance of switching to summer tires to ensure optimal safety.

– To ensure optimal grip, you should therefore switch to summer tyres, it's not too late, he says

In addition, winter tires negatively affect the car's range. And that both in terms of battery capacity and fuel economy.

Winter tires have up to 15% higher rolling resistance, which means they use more energy and wear faster due to the bloodier rubber compound adapted to lower temperatures.

– That's why it's a good idea to get the tires changed now – and especially before the car holiday starts," says Volker Nitz.

Settlement across the country
The settlement covers 1,480 physically controlled cars in public car parks in Jutland, Funen and Zealand in week 26.
