Volvo's owner promises that the new electric car battery will last for 50 years

Chinese Geely Holding, which owns both Polestar and Volvo, has developed the 'super blade' battery, which they promise will last for 50 years without any loss.

The car group Geely Holding today owns everything from Polestar to Volvo to Lotus. But when the Chinese are not buying up the European car park, they are developing.

This time batteries. The so-called Short Blade battery consists of lithium, iron and phosphate. So a so-called LFP battery that we already know from several cars today. Among other things. Tesla and BYD make use of the technology.

Just not in the same way that Geely now claims to be able to. The energy density in the Short Blade is 192 Wh per kilo. This is what the car group writes in a press release .

By comparison, BYD's blade battery has an energy density of 150 Wh per kilo.

But Geely believes it can do more than that. The Chinese say batteries last 50 years without losing anything. That, Geely claims, is the same as a million kilometers.

The charging time is also significantly faster than today. Geely claims it takes 17 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent. A good 17 minutes faster than the average LFP battery available today.

At temperatures down to minus 30 degrees Celsius, the Chinese have come to the conclusion that the Short Blade only becomes minimally slower at a charging stand. Here, it will take one minute and 47 seconds longer to fill the battery with current from 10 to 80 percent.

We will have to wait until August to find out which car Geely intends to put the battery in first. But the Chinese already say that the Short Blade will be able to withstand fire 'and other loads'.
