DeLorean resurrects after 42 years – becomes twice as fast

It has been 42 years since the car brand DeLorean Motor Company shut down. Now the brand's only model is resurrected as an electric car with twice as much horsepower.

This year marks 42 years since the DeLorean Motor Company, despite massive public investment, had to turn something around. And that after just 4 years and a production of 9,000 cars.

But now something new is happening with the old cars. That is, the ones that still exist. The English company Electrogenic wants to convert the cars to electric operation.

That is, if the owners want to, and there is some indication of that, at least if you ask the English, who have been working on the project since 2018.

– Since we founded Electrogenic in 2018, we have seen great interest from all over the world when it comes to DeLorean conversions.

– With its sci-fi design – which still amazes 40 years later – but an unimpressive engine, the Electrogenic really is the perfect option, says company director Steve Drummond.

Steve Drummond emphasizes that the powertrain can be installed in cars, regardless of whether they are models with manual transmission or automatic transmission.

Making a DeLorean electric is no big deal if you ask Drummond. Because everything is made so that it fits where the technology for the original 2.85-liter V6 engine lies.

However, this does not mean that there is no free spin. In addition to the car, the DeLorean owners must find 85,000 pounds rather than the conversion itself. This corresponds to 750,000 Danish kroner.

But then the car will have 215 horsepower and 310 Nm. 85 horsepower more than the original petrol engine could "boast". But it is actually more interesting that the DeLorean as an electric car is twice as fast.

At least from 0 to 100 km/h. The small V6 engine practically drags the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 10 seconds. With the Electrogenic electric motor, the same discipline is over in 5 seconds.

Here at home there are actually a good handful of DeLorean examples. That is, with the original petrol engine. Among other things, a very rare copy turned up at a dealer on Funen in 2022. Read more about it here .
