Volvo and Daimler are now building hydrogen cells for trucks

The first of some common fuel cells for trucks have now become a reality in a collaboration between Volvo and Daimler.

Volvo has just presented Europe's most powerful truck. But the Swedish truck manufacturer is also dabbling in alternative fuels. Among other things together with Daimler.

Cellcentric is the name of the company that will build fuel cell systems for the future's hydrogen-powered heavy rail vehicles.

The production facility was inaugurated on Thursday last week, and the first milestone has already been reached. Namely the first small, pilot production.

The company writes this in a press release .

The factory is located in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, and from here fuel cells are to be developed, produced and distributed for the really heavy part of the transport network.

– The opening of our pilot production facility in Esslingen today is not the end point of large-scale production, but rather the plan for the next step.

– In the coming years, we will continue to consistently push for the industrialization and scaling of the production of fuel cell systems at the factory in Weilheim, says Cellcentric's director Lars Johansson.

Cellcentric hopes to have full production by the end of this decade. But right now things are small with the hydrogen trucks. And that actually even though a brand like Toyota is also testing the technology.

Right now, however, Europe is not ready for electrified trucks. This is the Danish Danfoss' assessment after having an electric truck from Denmark to France. However, it does not necessarily have anything to do with the trucks themselves. Read more about it here .
