Popular part of Google Maps may be on its way out

If you use Google Maps in the car, you have probably also come across events in the app that users share with each other. But it may be over now.

Google Maps can trace its roots all the way back to 2004 and the two Danish brothers Lars and Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen, who developed the company Where 2 Technologies the year before.

Today, many people run around with what later became Google Maps, directly in their pockets. If it is not the car's navigation system.

However, not everything survives in the popular GPS program. Because soon, the app's users may have to find their way around in a different way. At least if they are looking for events in the local area.

That's what Android Authority writes.

According to the American media, which has taken a closer look at the so-called source code for the next update, which Google is currently beta-testing among users, the 'Followed Places' function disappears.

Since 2018, the function has made it possible to follow a personal profile, an area or a company in the local area. Ever since then, users with that type of 'subscription' have been notified when something happens at the company, the person or in the local area.

But that function has been completely removed from the update that Google will soon roll out to all Maps users.

According to Android Authority, the feature could disappear as soon as January 2025. For now, though, it's still unclear if Google actually intends to stifle one of their own features. But if it happens, it won't be the first time.

Google's attempt at a social media, Google+, opened to the first users in 2011. When the user base peaked, 200 million people used the service, but it closed again in 2019.

In fact, Maps itself is also on its way out. At least in cars. Here is the latest Android Automotive that several car brands put into their cars from the factory. This is, among other things, the case for Swedish-Chinese Volvo.
