Copenhagen is building 1,000 empty parking spaces – more are on the way

No one uses the parking spaces. Because there are no cars. But now more parking spaces must be made for shared cars in Copenhagen.

It may sound silly. But it is good enough. In Copenhagen, far more of the parking spaces that no one uses must be created.

This is written by TV2 Kosmopol .

Specifically, it concerns parking spaces for shared cars, which are currently poorly used in the capital.

However, even more of the empty parking spaces must be made. Last year, a majority at Copenhagen's town hall decided to convert 1,000 parking spaces in the city for the purpose.

But according to TV2 Kosmopol, only 5 out of the 100 spaces that have already been converted have been used by shared cars. The rest? Yes, they are empty.

The figures are based on a new evaluation of the scheme by the Technical and Environmental Administration. The same administration expects, however, that more people will use the parking spaces. Especially because 'a car-sharing operator has started to use the spaces', writes the administration.

However, it must have happened after the municipality had prepared the figures. Whether that corresponds to reality cannot be confirmed.

In 2025 alone, the municipality plans to convert a further 600 ordinary parking spaces into the kind that can only be used by electric shared cars.

And although as many as three car-sharing services have closed in Denmark – including the Semler venture Dribe – in the course of this year, Enhedslisten's mayor Line Barfoed is adamant that car-sharing is a good idea.

Funnily enough, they have also discovered this in cities other than Copenhagen – the number of shared cars is steadily increasing, not least in cities in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Germany, says a debate post from the mayor on Ingenioren Mobilitytech from May this year.
