Volkswagen regrets electric car design: We must be sharper

It was not without reason that Volkswagen fired design chief Jozef Kaban in January 2023. He made the cars too boring. The new man in office will tighten up.

Volkswagen design chief Jozef Kaban rolled out of the factory gate in Wolfsburg shortly after the presentation of the ID.Life concept car.

Even then, the other bosses told Jozef Kaban, who has since been hired to design MG's future cars, that the Slovak's dash was too boring.

And now his successor, Andreas Mindt, says that the brand has taken the criticism of the ID. models ID.3, 4 and 5 to heart.

He explains this in an interview with Automobilwoche .

– We must be more progressive when it comes to design, explains Mindt.

At the same time, he emphasizes that the days of looking back at the historical model program to find inspiration for new models are completely over. At least for Volkswagen.

The announcement comes from Volkswagen in an attempt to counter the criticism that especially the first electric cars in the ID. series have received.

Even internally at Volkswagen, there has been dissatisfaction with the brand's design. The former head of design Jozef Kaban was to have been scolded by the chief director Thomas Schäfer for his work with the concept car, which has since become the ID.2. A car that will be born in 2025.

One thing is design, another thing is that Volkswagen was actually in a hurry to send the first ID. cars on the street. Too busy too.

A model like the ID.3 was full of bugs when it hit the market. A number of Danish owners complained about this. Among other things. in DR's consumer program Cash. Volkswagen in Denmark also had to crawl to the cross.

– We have never ever launched a product where we have been so plagued by errors on the first shipment, said the then VW director in Denmark Mads Nor Lauvring to the media.
