Legendary Mercedes resurrects with V6 engine

After 34 years, it's time for a comeback for one of Mercedes' most legendary models – the 190 Evo II. HWA AG rebuilds 100 cars for DKK 5.3 million. kroner each.

Do you remember the Mercedes-Benz 190 Evo II? Of course you can.

If you don't remember the rivalry with the BMW E30 M3, you've definitely heard about it. And now there is actually news from that side.

However, it will not be Mercedes itself that breathes new life into the old legend. On the other hand, the German tuner HWA AG does. 100 cars will be converted, and production will start next year.

Until now, HWA, which is actually located right next door to AMG in Affalterbach and is named after founder Hans-Werner Aufrecht, has not wanted to say much about the technical aspects of the conversion.

But they will now. In fact, we already knew that the original 2.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine would smoke for a while. Now HWA AG says that it has made an agreement with Mercedes for a shipment of 3-liter V6 engine.

Sourced a bit by AMG, we also already know that that engine can easily deliver 450 horsepower and 550 Nm. The bad news? That is, in addition to the fact that only 100 cars must be built.

It will be an expensive pleasure. As in rabid animals. Each individual conversion, which must therefore already be based on an expensive 190 Evo II, must cost at least 714,000 euros. This corresponds to 5.3 million Danish kroner.

In return, HWA promises to divide the work into three stages. First, a 'regular' 190 Evo II is stripped of everything, leaving only the raw bodywork. Next, the metal is thoroughly cleaned, because the car is reassembled using the very latest technology.

This means, among other things, full 380 millimeter discs with six-piston calipers at the front. On the rear axle, you make do with four pistons in the caliber and 360 millimeter discs.

The entire car's aerodynamics are also rebuilt, so that there is 80 kilos of downforce at 200 km/h. It may not sound like much compared to today's super and hypercars, but after all, a little is better than nothing.

The only thing we don't get to see yet is the car's interior. But the cabin will be refreshed with a digital speedometer which, however, is faithful to the original design with the analogue needles.

Finally, HWA AG moves an entire living room of Recaro chairs into the cabin. Just like a 'smartphone integration' becomes optional equipment. Whatever that means. But at that price, it is probably a little more than just a simple Bluetooth module.
