Polestar company promises electric cars that charge in 6 minutes

The Israeli battery company StoreDot, which is partly owned by Volvo and Polestar, promises to be able to build so-called 7C batteries in a few years. This means a charging time from 20 to 80 percent in 6 minutes.

Are electric cars where they need to be today? Far from.

There is still a lot of development potential in the battery packs. Recently, Chinese BYD has promised so-called 6C batteries already this year.

The Chinese say that it will be possible to charge the battery pack from 10 to 80 percent in 10 minutes. It lowers another Chinese – namely Polestar/Volvo – to 6 minutes.

The Israeli company StoreDot, which is partly owned by the Chinese brands, thus believes to be ready with 7C batteries in 'just a few years'. If the battery arrives, electric cars like the upcoming Polestar 5 will be able to be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 6 minutes.

The Israelis with the partly Chinese owners – Daimler AG is also involved – say that the technology will be ready in 2028. In other words, the same year that Nissan believes to be ready with solid state batteries. Something that has long been heralded as the 'great revolution in electric cars'. Read more about it here.

The battery that StoreDot says it is developing will be able to be recharged 2,000 times with minimal wear and tear. In addition, the charging power will be 540 kW. When things go fast today, there is 300 kW available in a so-called lightning charger.

But the battery manufacturer believes it can do more than that. Already this year, the company claims that they will be ready with a battery pack that charges for 160 kilometers of driving in 5 minutes. In 2026, you will be able to shave a minute off the same time for the same number of kilometres, because it will take 3 minutes in 2028.

The deciding factor is the energy density of the battery packs that StoreDot claims to have found. Because if there is anything to it, the company will be able to build smaller and therefore lighter batteries.

– Normal cell chemistry for electric cars is either high energy or high power capacity. We have changed the rules with our silicon-dominant anodes as we have developed long-lasting cells with both high energy and extremely fast charging.

– But for us this is not just a concept created in a laboratory. We want to develop it into something that is commercially sustainable.

– A proven solution that will support car manufacturers' CO2 emission targets and time perspectives, says Dan Corfas, who is Product Director at StoreDot, in a press release .

However, the battery company may not be as busy as their own timeline for the 7C batteries suggests. Several car brands are in at least as much of a hurry to find the reverse gear when it comes to promised electric cars. Most recently, General Motors has lowered the target with 100,000 electric cars. Read more about it here .
