The 3-cylinder Toyota GR Yaris now has 1,000 horsepower

The small engine in the small Toyota now produces an insane 1,000 horsepower after development work by Australian LamSpeed Racing.

The engine in the Toyota GR Yaris is still no larger than 1,600 cubic meters distributed over three cylinders. However, that doesn't hold the tuners back.

Especially in Australia, they are busy coaxing horsepower out of the little petrol engine. It was PowerTune that showed the way last year. Here they set out with 740.9 horsepower in the same engine.

But there is still more to come. LamSpeed Racing says their GR Yaris makes 887 horsepower and 776 Nm at the wheels. And if you take into account the loss of power in the driveline, it can be converted to a crazy 1,000 horsepower in the engine itself.

However, readings from the rolling field indicate that the small engine is taking a while to gather all its enormous power. Something only happens after 4,200 revolutions in minutes. But then, on the other hand, a lot also happens.

No matter how you twist and turn the numbers, LamSpeed Racing has already set records with their Yaris. Last year, the Australians were the first in the world to push the little Japanese down to under 9 seconds on a 1/4 mile course.

Conversely, Toyota is not the only car brand to 'store' horsepower in the engine. In fact, it is more the rule than the exception that especially new performance models can do much more than the factories state.

And it doesn't actually have to be about cars with fossil cars at all. The electric car brands underplay in the same way. We already found a good example at Tesla in the Model S Plaid in 2022. Read more about it here .
