An AK-47 can't shoot through this Volkswagen Golf GTI

Probably the world's most famous rifle, an AK-47, cannot shoot through this armored Volkswagen Golf GTI.

When do you know you are comfortable in a car?

When a bullet from the world's most famous assault rifle can't finish you off. And that is exactly the case in this Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk. 8.

This is obviously because the car is heavily reinforced with 3.5 millimeter thick steel and lightweight ballistic glass. This also means that only the side window on the driver's side can be rolled down.

Or that is to say, almost. Because the glass can move halfway down. The other windows are permanently closed. And now you might be thinking; where on earth do you need such a Golf GTI? The answer is simple – in South Africa.

At least this is where the car was developed. Even the battery, which in a Golf is out with the rest of the technology in the engine compartment, is wrapped in a protective bulletproof layer.

Of course, this kind of thing costs a little. Literally so – and even in several areas. Firstly, the car now weighs almost 1,800 kilos. For comparison, the factory car weighs 1,385 kilos. Second, the price has grown.

It takes almost three months to rebuild the car, and the conversion alone costs 35,000 dollars, equivalent to 243,000 Danish kroner. It is 'only' DKK 85,000 more than what the factory car, which must be obtained in advance, costs from the factory. That is, without Danish tax.
