32 percent of all Danish cars change hands in the same way

Since the launch in 2021, more and more Danish drivers have chosen to use the Motorstyrelsen's app 'change of ownership' when they buy a car. In 2023, 32 percent of all car sales took place this way.

The Danish Motor Agency's Change of Ownership app simplifies the process of transferring ownership of a motor vehicle when buying and selling between private individuals.

This is practical when, for example, a person buys a used car from a neighbor or via a used car portal.

It is crucial that the change of ownership takes place in a timely manner. The buyer is responsible for carrying out the change of ownership within four working days.

This is what the Motorstyrelsen writes in a press release .

If this deadline is exceeded, the buyer may risk having the number plates confiscated. The seller must also pay taxes and liability insurance on the car until the re-registration is completed.

Since the app's launch, its usage has increased significantly. In the second half of 2023, 32 percent of ownership changes were made via the app. This is a fourfold increase compared to the first half of 2021, when the app was introduced.

– It must be easy and safe to trade between private individuals. That is why we are happy that more and more people are using our app. It is a simple tool to register the change of ownership immediately, says Claus Holm, deputy director of the Motor Authority.

– It is important for both buyer and seller that the change of ownership takes place within the deadline of four days. The Danish Motor Agency is always ready to provide guidance if car owners are in doubt about the rules, adds Claus Holm.

In January 2021, the deadline for re-registering a choral toy in Denmark was significantly reduced. For 1 January 2021, the deadline was four weeks from the purchase. Ever since then, there has been a deadline of just four days, if the police are not to be able to e.g. to cut the number plates off the car.
