Ford closes factory in Germany – won't build cars anymore

Soon, cars will no longer be built at Ford's factory in Saarlouis, Germany. When the last Focus rolls out of the gates, the pharmaceutical company Vetter steps in.

When the last Focus is scheduled to roll off the assembly line in 2025, it will also be the end of car production in Saarlouis in western Germany.

The factory, which was inaugurated by Henry Ford's eldest grandson, Henry Ford II, in June 1970, will not be closed permanently, however. Instead, it is to be converted into a production site for the pharmaceutical company Vetter.

This is written by Automobilwoche .

Ford has for a long time tried to get others to produce cars at the factory in Saarlouis. But after an all but signed agreement between a Chinese brand and Ford itself fell apart, this has not been successful after all.

The deal reportedly fell apart between the partners at the last minute. Why is not known exactly. The last Ford Focus leaves the assembly line in the summer of 2025. A bit later than planned. But this is allegedly due to an agreement with the employees.

In 2021, the Danish Ford importer tried to go to court with Boosted, because the editors wrote that Ford was already trying to sell the factory in Saarlouis then. It has since been proven that Boosted was absolutely right.

Ford are not the only ones who are now packing up a German car factory. It has already happened once this year, when a tiny car brand went bankrupt for the second time in March. Read more about it here .
