The EU allows Stockholm to ban petrol and diesel cars

There is nothing preventing Stockholm from banning all petrol and diesel cars in large parts of the city. At least not according to the EU.

The EU has now looked at whether it contravenes the principle of free movement in the member states when Sweden's capital Stockholm bans diesel and petrol cars in large parts of the city.

And for the owners of these cars, the result is the same as bad news. For Stockholm, according to EU rules, diesel and petrol cars may be banned.

That's what We Bilägare writes.

РThis means that the introduction of the environmental zone continues as planned. On the night of New Year's Eve 2024, Stockholm will be the first city in the world to exclude petrol and diesel cars from part of the city in this way, claims Lars Str̦mgren, who is Stockholm's traffic councillor.

However, the ban does not only affect private individuals. Taxis and professional coaches are also not allowed in the part of Stockholm that will soon be banned for cars with internal combustion engines.

However, police cars and ambulances are not covered by the ban, just as the city government in Stockholm cannot throw cars with a parking permit and disabled cars out of the city either.

And in fact, cars with internal combustion engines are still allowed to drive around in the new environmental zone, which the Swedes call 'class 3'. But it requires that these are hybrid cars that meet the EU emission standard Euro6.

In this country, all municipalities have been allowed to introduce one so-called zero-emission zone per town after a new majority agreement on Christansborg. However, one city has already announced that it will go much further than that. Read more about it here .
