The world's rarest Saab will be auctioned this weekend

The plan was to build one for every day throughout 2011. But Saab Automobile never got that far with the 9-3 Aero Cabriolet Independence Edition.

Saab 9-3 Aero Cabriolet Independence Edition.

Write the name behind the ear. Because behind it is a car which is nothing less than the rarest factory-built Saab to date.

The story goes that 365 copies were built. So one for every day in 2011. But Saab just never got that far, because the car brand went bankrupt on December 19 that year.

In fact, the Swedish brand, owned at the time by American General Motors, only managed to build 38 cars.

The first car was given to the then managing director, the Dutchman Victor Muller. And it is car number two in the series that is going to auction now.

It takes place in connection with the annual 'Saab collector's auction, which Bilweb Auctions is behind. The cars – there are 40 of them in total – will be sold at an online auction. But the highlight of the 'collection' is the unique convertible.

It is otherwise composed of all the best parts on Saab's factory shelves at the time. The instrument cluster is swathed in a mixture of carbon fiber and leather with hand stitching. No tight spots here.

Saab called the color Sunset-Red, but the effect – i.e. the number of horsepower in the engine – is nothing to brag about. The 1.9-liter diesel engine produces 180 horsepower.

The second Independence Edition in the series was originally bought by a car dealer who sold it on to a married couple. But only on one condition. Namely that he could later be allowed to buy it back.

It happened nine years later. And today the car has just a modest 35,320 kilometres. Which is also reflected in the expected price. Bilweb Auctions expects to fetch at least 700,000 Swedish kroner – perhaps a million – for the car.

This corresponds to somewhere between 466,000 and 661,000 Danish kroner. The auction starts this weekend. Specifically, Thursday 8 June at 4 p.m. If you are now interested in making an offer.

By the way, did you know that the last passenger car ever with the Saab logo was bought by a Dane? Yes, it is good enough. Read much more about it here .
