Choirs around Denmark – new car is a huge failure for Volvo

Before the EM90, Volvo has never built an MPV. And there is probably a reason for that. Motorists are staying away from the brand's most expensive car to date.

The EM90 is Volvo's most expensive car ever.

But that's not necessarily a good thing. In any case, Volvo can hardly be known to write home about the sales figures, which right now only come from China. Because the electric car, which is by the way Volvo's first MPV, is a gigantic flop.

Motorists in the world's largest car market steer decidedly without the car. In three months, the Chinese brand has sold only 859 copies of the EM90. And in the month of May, it amounted to just 244 cars.

This is in stark contrast to, for example, the much smaller EX30, which is identical to the Smart#1 and Zeekr X, which has thrown away 11,035 orders in the same month.

Volvo showed the EM90 to the outside world in November last year, but we had until February this year for production to start rolling. However, it is more or less silent again due to the failing sales.

However, the EM90 has little to do with Volvo. It is a brand change. Because the car exists and already existed for the presentation last year as Zeekr 009.

In order to avoid an internal copycat case, however, Volvo has changed the front of the car so that the headlights in particular are reminiscent of the ones you find in the rest of the Volvo model range equipped with. They are called Thor's hammer. The headlights, that is.

Despite minimal sales, Volvo's people still claim to be very satisfied with the way the EM90 is performing and the reception the model has received.

– The EM90 is not a volume product and we are happy with how it has been received so far. Production will be gradually ramped up, says Kristin Boldemann Wester, global PR manager for Volvo, according to Carup .

The sluggish sales can also be linked to the price. The EM90, which is currently only sold in China, costs from 818,000 yuan. This corresponds to 774,000 Danish kroner.

The best-selling Volvo at home is the small EX30. 1,539 copies of the car have so far been given Danish number plates.
