Scrapping electric car because a new charging socket costs DKK 65,000

A Scottish Renault Zoe owner saw no other option but to scrap the car as a Renault workshop wants more for a new charging socket than the car is worth.

A Scottish Renault Zoe owner is so shocked by an offer to repair the car's charging socket that he has seen no other option but to scrap the car.

The Renault was bought used in 2020, and it worked flawlessly right up until one July day in 2023. Here it stopped charging completely. It could still run, but no current was coming to the battery.

At the authorized Renault workshop, where the car subsequently came to a halt, they thought it was good to be able to see the fault. The connection between the charging plug and the battery itself had burned out, the explanation went.

Restoring the connection with a new charging plug can and could well be done, the explanation went. But it would be an expensive game. The prize was 7,500 British pounds.

This is written by the newspaper The Guardian , which the Renault owner has addressed.

The 7,500 pounds corresponds to 65,000 Danish kroner. Or far more than the owner can ever get for the used electric car by reselling it. And that even if the charging plug works.

– We bought an electric car for environmental reasons and are very sad that it has so easily become useless with such a great waste of resources.

– We have also had regular contact with Renault. We have written to its managing director in the UK a few times, but only get a call from customer service that they can't do anything, says the car owner, according to the newspaper.

According to The Guardian, a garage that specializes in repairing electric cars has jumped in with an offer to get the car on the road for 'less than what Renault has to have'.

All in all, large repair costs on the latest cars are already a significant challenge. New figures show that insurance companies are already declaring one in five cars a total loss. Having a repair shop repair even minor damage is simply too expensive. Read more about it here .
