VW's secret Golf 6 got a VR6 engine and RS6 brakes

The car got the brakes from an Audi RS 6 and the rims from a Lamborghini. Volkswagen's people just never got the green light for the Golf 6 with a VR6 engine.

Officially, it does not exist. And so anyway. For Volkswagen built at least one prototype of the Golf 6 with a VR6 engine.

Because when the model was brand new in 2009, it was apparently not quite in place whether the VR6 engine should carry over from the Mk.5 platform to the Mk.6.

For the same reason, Volkswagen's engineers played with the idea so much that they actually took it seriously. However, only at the prototype stage.

This is written by Motor1 , who interviewed Enrico Beltz. The man responsible for communication in Volkswagen's classic department.

The car had a 3.2-liter VR6 engine that was tuned by Rothe Motorsport. Unlike the R32 on the Golf 5 platform, where the engine came from, the prototype did not have 250 horsepower but a whopping 463.

It could be done because, among other things, the engine was equipped with custom-made pistons, a larger Garret turbocharger, different injection nozzles and a new intake.

In order to tame the horsepower, Volkswagen also equipped the small Golf with the front brakes from the Audi RS 6 of the time. Just as they 'stole' some rims from Lamborghini. The undercarriage is a Bilstein B16.

Volkswagen paired the engine with a DSG automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. Enough for a top speed 'over 250 km/h', says Enrico Beltz.

Why Volkswagen ultimately threw the plans for another VR6-powered Golf in the bin, history unfortunately does not report anything. Fortunately, the brand did not throw away the prototype. And it is now part of Volkswagen's classic collection.

That is why the car is also part of the exhibition at the GTI Fanfest Рthe former GTI Treffen W̦rthersee Рwhich takes place in Volkswagen's hometown of Wolfsburg at the end of July.

The black Golf 6 with VR6 is far from the only secret Volkswagen has kept well hidden for many years. Did you know, for example, that the brand said no thanks to a Golf with a V10 engine and 500 horsepower? Read more about it here .
