That's how much your driving habits affect the price of car insurance

Are you aware of how much you pay in car insurance in relation to the short kilometres? The difference is greater than most people think.

A new analysis shows that car insurance premiums can vary significantly depending on how many kilometers you drive per year. Differences in corsels monsters can result in a price difference of up to DKK 14,500.

Surveys carried out by the comparison portal Samlino.dk show that both short daily trips and longer trips have a significant impact on the car budget. The results reveal that the number of annual kilometers has a great influence on the price of car insurance with both liability and comprehensive.

For drivers who charge more than average, the price differences are particularly pronounced. Samlino.dk has analyzed the market and found significant price differences based on annual mileage. The data set shows not only average mileage, but also variations in insurance premiums between drivers with different traffic patterns.

According to Samlino.dk, 75 percent of Danes drive around 10,000 kilometers a year. This corresponds to an average lowest insurance premium of DKK 6,282 annually. Motorists who drive less than this average can save up to 22 percent on their premium, which corresponds to an annual saving of DKK 1,141.

On the other hand, motorists who drive more than 40,000 kilometers per year – roughly equivalent to the circumference of the earth – will pay an average lowest premium of DKK 19,732.

Mads Bukholt, insurance manager at Samlino.dk, explains: "The more kilometers a driver drives annually, the more the price of the insurance premium rises. This is due to a simple logic: the longer you spend behind the wheel, the greater the probability of being involved in an accident." Insurance companies therefore see annual mileage as an important indicator of a driver's risk profile, along with other factors such as age. The price of the insurance is adjusted in line with the annual number of kilometers and thus the statistical risk of damage.

The analysis also shows large differences between the cheapest and most expensive insurance companies, regardless of whether you drive a few or many kilometers annually. A motorist who drives 10,000 kilometers a year can save up to DKK 2,604 annually by choosing the cheapest premium rather than the most expensive.

Kilometers per year Average cheapest premium Price difference (DKK) Price increase (%)
1-9,999 km DKK 5,141
10,000 km DKK 6,282 DKK 1,141 22%
10,001-19,999 km DKK 6,818 DKK 536 9%
20,000-29,999 km DKK 7,669 DKK 851 12%
30,000-39,999 km DKK 8,811 DKK 1,142 15%
+40,000 km DKK 19,732 DKK 10,921 124%

Up to DKK 14,500 difference Although motorists who drive fewer kilometers per year generally pay less for their car insurance, the figures still show large differences when it comes to the choice of insurance company. Regardless of the type of vehicle, there can be a difference of several thousand kroner between the cheapest and most expensive insurance policies with both liability and comprehensive insurance.
