Mazda confirms: Considering new sports car with wankel engine

A new RX model will – if it comes to fruition – have a longitudinal, two-chamber wankel engine.

The Wankel engine has actually already made a comeback. Just not as you might think. That is, in a sports car with rear-wheel drive.

But it may very well be because Mazda is simply considering what a car that does not use the Wankel engine as a range extender should look like.

In any case, the top Mazda now confirms that the wankel engine – which you now want to throw money at to develop – can easily find its way into a sports car one day.

The car brand says so in a press release .

The announcement comes after Mazda jointly with Toyota and Subaru announced that they will invest heavily in the development of the internal combustion engine.

In this connection, Toyota presented several four-cylinder engines, while Subaru gave a preview of the next generation of the boxer engine.

For motor enthusiasts, however, it was Mazda that came up with by far the most interesting news. Mazda showed a new development of a wankel engine with two chambers.

And although Mazda does not want to delve too much into the technical details, the ceiling was raised for the engine to one day easily find its way into a sports car.

– The engine has been developed to reduce emissions and create less vibration through an increased stroke volume. It is being considered whether the engine should be used in sports cars, says Mazda in the official press release.

However, Mazda's plans for further development of the Wankel engine are only part of the collaboration between the three car brands. What they themselves call a 'multi-track approach'.

Neither Mazda, Toyota nor Subaru believe that plug-in electric cars will be the only real solution when it comes to transport needs in the future.

In fact, Toyota's former director and current chairman Akio Toyoda does not believe that electric cars will ever gain a market share higher than 30 percent. Read more about it here .
