Former BMW boss: Naive to think petrol will be banned

It probably looks that way right now. But there is not much support in the ban on petrol and diesel cars from 2035, says former BMW manager.

He was on BMW's board of directors until November last year. And so also when the EU decided to ban all new diesel and petrol cars from 2035.

But Pieter Nota does not think so, there is the smallest team in it. He tells this in an edition of the Dutch podcast National Auto Show .

Pieter Nota was part of BMW's top management from 2018 to November 2023, and he believes that it is completely unthinkable that a new EU parliament will leave the ban as it stands now.

– A new EU Commission will, I suspect in any case, decide on a postponement or adjustment of the ban no later than 2026. It's just inevitable, I think, says Nota.

When Pieter Nota says what he does, it is connected to the fact that the Dutch businessman does not believe that the car industry is guaranteed the almost unimaginable access to raw materials that are needed if only electric cars are to be legal.

– No one has guaranteed access to these raw materials, and it is absolutely naive to assume that all of Europe's volume and needs can be covered.

– Who controls the majority of the resources? It's the Chinese. Good, but we must not make ourselves dependent or be exposed to blackmail from such a superpower, says Pieter Nota in the podcast.

In this way, Nota aligns itself with its former employer. Contrary to many of the competitors, who are otherwise busy undoing goals for electric cars, BMW refuses to set a date for the phasing out of the internal combustion engine and finally.

However, electric cars are not going away. Not even if the EU decides to adjust or completely postpone the ban on everything other than synthetic fuels and electricity for electric cars in 2035.

Pieter Nota predicts that half of all new cars in 2030 will run on electricity. A brand like Toyota believes, on the other hand, that electric cars will never reach 'more than 30 percent of the market'. Read more about it here .
