40,000 Nissan models are banned from driving – airbags can kill

Nissan has notified 40,000 owners of their cars that they should not drive in the cars, which are equipped with life-threatening airbags from Takata.

The Takata case is one of those auto industry scandals that, like dieselgate, just won't go away.

Millions of cars have been equipped with life-threatening airbags from the bankrupt Japanese sub-supplier. And the deadly airbags are still causing problems for the car factories.

Most recently, Nissan has asked 40,000 owners of a number of models equipped with the problematic airbag not to drive the cars. However, the cars are only a few thousand out of a total of 736,000 cars that Nissan has recalled and will equip with new airbags.

The Associated Press writes that.

This time, Nissan believes it is necessary to stop coring cars such as the 2002 to 2006 Sentra, the 2002-2004 Pathfinder and the 2002 to 2003 QX4 SUV from sister brand Infiniti.

In the USA alone, the life-threatening airbags have killed 27 motorists. One of them died in a Nissan Sentra of the years that Nissan has now recalled.

The Takata case is based on the fact that the Japanese company built millions of airbags in which the substance ammonium nitrate breaks down over time. If it goes on long enough, there is a risk that the airbag will explode out of the blue. And that is what has now happened in far too many cases.

Nissan is not the only car brand that has recalled cars in large numbers with these kinds of airbags. Toyota, BMW and Dodge have all had recalls within the past year.

However, the Takata case is not limited to the United States. It is spread to cars all over the world. At home, Honda recalled 3,600 cars in 2019 due to the error.

A year before, Takata had gone bankrupt with a debt of 60 billion kroner. The rest of the company was subsequently acquired by American Joyson Safety Systems.
