Toyota will build gasoline cars until it might be banned

Future Toyota models from the Gazoo Racing division stay far away from pure electric cars, despite an ever greater focus on the type of car in the industry.

Toyota's performance division Gazoo Racing is now officially turning its back on electric cars. In any case, the department will stick to the internal combustion engine.

This is what GR director Tomoya Takahashi tells us in an interview with Car Expert .

– We want to use the internal combustion engine as much as possible.

– It may come to the point that the internal combustion engine will be banned in the future. But the internal combustion engine is not the enemy, it is the emission of CO2. We invest in the development of new engines, says Tomoya Takahashi.

However, it is not only the GR department that has that attitude internally at Toyota. In fact, the board as a whole shares that idea. And they are not alone either.

This week it emerged that several Japanese car brands will join forces to throw resources into the development of new internal combustion engines.

In the interview, Tomoya Takahashi shed some light on what lies behind Toyota's approach to the internal combustion engine, which the brand calls the 'multi-track'.

– By using hybrid technology, we can reduce CO2 emissions, we can also use CO2-neutral fuels.

– But we are not sure what will happen with electrification and when it will happen. In any case, no one can see 10 years into the future. Our approach is therefore more options rather than a focus exclusively on electric cars.

At the same time, Tomoya Takahashi emphasizes that the department he heads is not only interested in building fast cars. They must also be fun to sing, he says.
