Denmark owes DKK 3.5 million in special car stands

Diplomatic immunity also applies to the cars embassy people use. In London, Danish diplomats have received DKK 3.58 million. kroner in environmental zone taxes, which they blow on.

A booth for entering an environmental zone goes nas. Stalls for this kind of as much as 130 million kroner, on the other hand, are totally unmanageable. So for most people.

Just not for embassy people and diplomats. Because of the immunity that diplomats are protected by the world, the US embassy can blow on the milozone charges they got in London.

Which also happens in a big way. The Americans' embassy staff in the English capital have bills for as much as 14.6 million pounds in the so-called u-lez charge (environmental zone tax, ed.).

This is shown by a report from the Transport Agency in London – Transport For London.

And that's just the pure environmental zone tax. Anyone else who refuses to pay is fined £240. This corresponds to 2,100 Danish kroner.

The principle is the same for diplomats. But the English authorities cannot do anything because of the immunity to actually demand payment of the fines and taxes.

Japan's embassy people are almost as bad. They have £10m of unpaid environmental zone charges. India follows with 8.5 million pounds.

The list covers a period of 20 years. Namely from 2003 up to and including 31 December 2003. Denmark is also on the list. However, "The Royal Danish Embassy", as the English say, owes not nearly as much as the Americans do.

In fact, the Danish treasury could get away with a bill of 406,000 pounds, equivalent to 3.58 million kroner, if you bothered to pay. However, there is nothing to indicate that.

Conversely, Transport For London says that despite diplomatic immunity, the British government will pursue anyone who does not pay the environmental zone tax. Whether that means bringing the embassies before the so-called International Court of Justice in The Hague, Holland.

Even here at home, however, the diplomats have a habit of doing exactly as they see fit in traffic.

Most recently, a driver for the South African ambassador has been exposed for his total lack of understanding of the Danish traffic rules. But he cannot be punished. Read more about it here .
