Volkswagen and Renault drop huge collaboration

It will not come to anything between Volkswagen and Renault. At least not when it comes to a small and cheap electric car.

Volkswagen doesn't want to work with Renault anyway, or is it the other way around? Perhaps the decision actually goes both ways.

In any case, it is now clear that the two car groups will not develop an electric car with a price tag of around or under 20,000 euros together. This corresponds to 150,000 Danish kroner.

Speaking to Automobilwoche , Wayne Griffiths, head of Cupra, which is part of the Volkswagen Group, points to the company's challenges.

– One of the problems with electromobility is that so far we have had no comparable model in the same price range as a cheap fossil car. That is why we are starting now, he says.

It is or Seat/Cupra that has been given overall responsibility for the Volkswagen Group being able to launch a small, 'cheap' electric car in just over a year and a half. The triplets are named: Volkswagen ID.2 All, Skoda Epiq and Cupra Raval.

However, those cars will not cost DKK 150,000. Instead, it is estimated that the Volkswagen ID.2 All ends up around 25,000 euros, i.e. just under 190,000 kroner.

But the corresponding Cupra will be more expensive. How much more expensive Wayne Griffiths won't say anything about yet.

On the other hand, Renault's chief executive Luca de Meo is sorry that the cooperation with the Germans has died after several months of negotiations.

– I wanted to show that the European industry could work together as a team, so I think it's a lost opportunity. But there may be other options, Renault boss Luca de Meo said at a recent conference.
