A new quota system for CO2 emissions is on its way through the EU system. When it comes into force in 2027, diesel and petrol will become significantly more expensive.
It is not only the Danish government that increases the price of fuel with taxes both this year and next year.
The EU does the same. A new CO2 quota system means that the energy companies must pay in a number of quotas in order to even sell their products – i.e. diesel and petrol – here in Europe.
Compared to Borsen, Mogens Fosgerau, who is a professor at the University of Copenhagen, believes that fuel will become so expensive in this way that fewer and fewer people will bother to buy it.
– You have to think very carefully, because you go out and buy a new fossil-fuel car, because it can quickly become expensive to run and difficult to sell, the professor tells the newspaper.

However, it is not certain that the new quotas will become a reality within the EU's borders. Ahead of the EU elections in June, a number of parties call that the upcoming bill is unreasonable to send to consumers.
– This means that many Danes will find it difficult to get things going if they are dependent on a fossil car or live in a house that is unlikely to get district heating within the next few years.
– We are fundamentally against that bill, says the Danish People's Party's lead candidate in the European Parliament elections, Anders Vistisen, to the Alting .
The DF politician is not alone in this attitude. In fact, he has several colleagues in the EU system who want to roll back the entire ban on new internal combustion engines in 2035. Read more about it here.
There are also indications that the car industry is wavering in its faith in the electric car. Or at least that the car type makes up all or most of the new car sales in 2030.
Most recently, it is rumored that Mercedes has scrapped the development of several electric cars. And from Ford it sounds like they will not only sell electric cars in the EU from 2030 after all. Read more about this here.
If the quota system is not adjusted – or if it is not abolished – it is expected that the Danes will have to pay DKK 1.09 more per liter of petrol, while diesel is expected to rise by DKK 1.17 per litre. So in pure taxes.
