New Volkswagen Golf is not worth the effort, says director

According to Volkswagen's chief executive, Thomas Schäfer, there is no longer any point in building the Golf with a combustion engine.

It can probably still be had as a factory new car. And even with both petrol and diesel engines.

But there is still no point in building the Golf as we know it with a combustion engine. Thomas Schäfer, Volkswagen's CEO, thinks so.

In any case, a Golf with a combustion engine is not worth the trouble, in light of the fact that Volkswagen also has electric cars on the program.

Schäfer tells this to the English magazine Car .

However, this does not mean that Volkswagen – together with the combustion engine in general – is ready to put the Golf in the grave.

– As a model, the Golf has always been a constant, but it has also contributed with technological progress. And regardless of when it will be, the next Golf will be electric, emphasized Schäfer.

Thomas Schäfer supplemented with the information that Volkswagen has just sent the facelifted Golf 8.5 onto the street. But from here it starts to look bleak for the internal combustion engine.

– In the big picture, it is difficult to see a brand new Golf with a combustion engine for itself. Such a car is simply not worth the trouble, says the director.

It is otherwise not because things are going badly for Volkswagen in the car segment named after the Golf. If you look at the group as a whole, almost 900,000 new hatchbacks were sold last year.

But it must be seen in the context of the success of the SUVs. Even for the smaller ones it is doing considerably better than for hatchbacks such as the VW Golf, Audi A3 and Seat Leon.

For example, Volkswagen sold 633,147 Tiguan models in 2023 alone. To that must be added the sales of the sister cars that are based on the same technology.

Conversely, this does not mean that Volkswagen will simply call the next ID.3 a Golf. Still, there are many indications that Volkswagen will drop both the ID. and GTX names. Read more about it here .

– It's called a Golf when the proportions match that model, emphasizes Thomas Schäfer.
